Royally Pissed!

Okay…it’s been one hell of a day here already and the day has barely gotten going good. Unaware of the drama going on, I carried my kids to school this morning. After dropping them off and driving past on the way to headstart, I notice a dozen or so cop cars, state troopers, and FBI agents(yep no joke).

Now I’m really curious as to what is going on. Why the hell are the FBI at the high school. The high school is right next door to the elementary school. So I get to headstart and find out that there was a bomb threat on the high school and a death threat on the principal. The school was aware of this yesterday before the kids went home.

My question is why weren’t we made aware of it (i.e. a letter or a phone call) so we could make the decision to send our kids to school or not. Upon finding out what was going on, I rushed back to school and checked my kids out because they were going to lock the school down.

I asked the secretary why we weren’t notified about the situation and she said, “It has nothing to do with us. It’s the high school.”

I said that I didn’t care if it was the high school. The high school is too close to the elementary school for my peace of mind. I said my kids weren’t staying and being locked down in the school. She said, “They’re only locking down the high school. We’re just going to lock all the exterior doors.”

By this time I’m freaking fuming. I told her they weren’t locking my kids anywhere unless they planned on locking me in with them. Needless to say I checked them out. It’s an unexcused absence, but I don’t care.

Does the school not think we need to be aware of stuff like this? Afterall, we are supposed to entrust the care of our children to them. If they can’t tell us about stuff like this, then how are we supposed to trust them? I’m so mad I could scream! I have a good mind to pay the school board a visit. UGH!

Okay, rant over…but I’m still pissed.

It sucks. Unfortunatly it’s a money issue when things like telling parents about something that might make the parents want to keep their kids home. They don’t get their money for the day if they have too many kids gone. I hate that you are having to go through this.

Personally, I don’t care about the money. The children’s safety should be a priority over money.

I agree with you on this. If they put the schools so close together, they should have notified you.

Our schools have a telephone recording that goes out. They started doing that after 9/11 and I get at least 3 calls a week letting us know what has happened at the local school.

My kids do not attend the school (I am a homeschooler) but they still call and give a recorded message with TONS of details of why there were cops at the school, bomb threats, etc. Some of the calls are disturbing to say the least and some are just not necessary (events) but I listen to each one and like that they have that.

We have also started a neighborhood group that parents (recommendations only) join and we share information on what is going on in the neighborhood and in the schools.

Maybe ya’ll should start one of those. Just a thought.

I am glad your kids are okay. And you can always write to the school district about having that turned into an excused abscense. They can do that.

The bureaucratic mindset at work is a wonder to behold, isn’t it?

“Not my department,” covers a multitude of sins.

I love your ideas, KarenneLyn. I wish our school had that in place. A recording will call to notify you that your kid missed school just in case they skipped or of a PTA meeting. They should implement stuff like what happpened today too.

You got that right, Rob! Everone wants to pass the buck to someone else. Come on people…take some responsbility.

Ummm…they do realize that if the bomb is large enough it can read the elementary school as well. I can’t believe they didnt tell you guys. All they had to do is do the same thing they did when we were kids. Pin a flyer to us and that way parents would have been notified. Le sigh. What is the world coming to?

Yeah..no doubt. It wouldn’t have taken them a few minutes to run off enough flyers…

Anywho they caught the moron who did it…it was a 16 year old kid. Since he’s a minor they won’t tell who it was. That kid has some serious issues I’m telling you.
